Mrs. Kelly's Second Graders Learn about Animals

Mrs. Kelly's second graders have been learning about different animals and their groups.  We learned even more from our Guest Speaker from Niabi Zoo. We learned many things as we had an up close look at some special animals.

This is a scarlet macaw.  His name is Sammy.  He has a very strong beak.  There is 1200 pounds of pressure in his beak.  He has two toes forward and two toes backward.  He can repeat sounds for protection.

This is a great horned owl.  We learned he is nocturnal and he can't turn his head all the way around but he can turn it pretty far!  He has five toes with very sharp claws.  They are silent flyers.

This is Daffodil.  She is a baby North American porcupine.  She has orange-yellowish teeth, which means she is healthy.  She eats plants, fruits, flowers and leaves.  She has no quills on her belly.  She likes to chew tree bark too.

A royal or ball python is from West Africa.  It lives in the temperate forest which means there is not a lot of rain.  It will stick out its tongue to smell.  It eats its prey head first.  It also can also unhook its jaw for eating bigger animals.

The three-toed box turtle lives near river and swamps.  It likes to eat plants.  It lays eggs.  The shell is attached to its body.

A blue tongued skink eats plants and meat.  It lives on the ground.  The females lay eggs but the eggs hatch inside their bodies.  It has a blue tongue so that its predators will think that it is poisonous.  It does have razor sharp teeth that can bite and hold on tight!

We were thrilled to be able to meet and touch a five-month old bobcat from Niabi Zoo.  How fun to see this playful animal up close.

We enjoyed our guest speaker from Niabi Zoo very much! We learned a lot about different animals!!!

You are listening to "Talk to the Animals"

You can turn the music off here.

If we could talk to the animals, just imagine it
Chatting to a chimpanzee.
Imagine talking to a tiger, chatting to a cheetah
What a neat achievement that would be.

If we could talk to the animals, learn their languages
Maybe take an animal degree.
We'd study elephant and eagle,
buffalo and beagle, alligator and guinea pig and flea.

We would converse in polar bear and python,
And we would curse in fluent kangaroo.
If people asked us, can you speak in rhinoceros,
We'd say, "Of courseous, can't you?"

If we could talk to the animals, learn their languages
Think of all the things we could discuss.
If we could walk with the animals, talk with the animals,
Grunt and squeak and squawk with the animals,
And they could squeak and squawk and speak and talk to us!
