Seton's second grade Social Studies program provides rich, relevant content in all areas of social studies, including active citizenship, geography and history lessons. These are the basic skills taught, many enrichment activities are added.

UNIT ONE: People All Around
    Identify a group and discover the groups to which we belong
    Recognize similarities and differences
    Identify how rules help people work together
    Group problem solving
    Living in neighborhoods and the different types of communities; urban, suburban and rural
    Learn how citizens live together by establishing and following rules and laws

UNIT 2: Earth, Our Home
    Identify the world is made up of countries, continents and oceans
    The earth has different types of land, water and weather
    People use natural resources and how to preserve them
    Use landform maps

UNIT 3: A Working World
    Using a flow chart
    The process of growing corn on a farm
    Map reading
    Trading and transporting goods
    The differences between needs and wants and how we work to get these

UNIT 4: We the People
    Solving a city problem
    The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and how the United States became its own country
    Washington D.C. and how our government leaders represent its citizens
    The United States' flag
    Different flags from around the world

UNIT 5: Discovering Our Past
    Identify Native Americans as the first Americans and analyze their culture
    Introduce different explorers and the first settlements
    Grid maps
    Identify the 13 original colonies and analyze why the colonies wanted their freedom from England
    Identify George Washington as a leader in the Revolutionary War and as the first President of the U.S.
    Examine slavery and the Civil War
    Evaluate the importance of Abraham Lincoln's contribution to the end of slavery
    Understand pioneers and the difficulties they faced
    Examine the Westward movement and how it affected Native Americans
    Recognize how the United States is made up of many people from many different countries

UNIT 6: Americans Celebrate
    Identify famous Americans and their effect on history
    Identify different historical and natural landmarks in the United States
    Using bar graphs
    Special holidays in the United States and in other countries
