Mrs.
Kelly's Second Graders Learn about BUTTERFLIES

In science
Mrs. Kelly's second graders will learn about the life cycle of animals in
a special way. We will have our
own butterflies in our classroom! We will be able to watch
as our larva grow, eat and move. We will wait and observe them while
they build their chrysalis where they will change into adult
butterflies. We will wait anxiously as they emerge and finally.....after we study our
butterflies for awhile.....we will send our special painted lady
butterflies off into the world. What a wonderful learning
experience for us all!
The painted lady butterfly begins its life as an egg. They take
3 to 5 days to hatch.
Once the caterpillar (larva) hatches it eats continually for
5 to 10 days. The larva is a little over one inch long. It builds a silky,
webbed nest while it eats.
Once it is grown, it will hang upside down from a leaf or the
silky string. It will form its chrysalis.
An adult butterfly will come out of the chrysalis in 7 to 10
days.
