Mrs. Kelly's Second Graders learn about
October 9, 2007-Here are our larva or caterpillars. They have already grown so big! In the bottom of the container is their nutrient or food. We noticed that there was some silky webbing which is a good sign that they are healthy. We also noticed they like to climb up the sides of their container. To take care of them we keep them out of sunlight, keep their lid on their container and we are careful not to knock them over. We are keeping a record of changes and any growth they make. We journal and illustrate the changes we see. We wait as they grow, change and hopefully become painted lady butterflies.
October 12, 2007-Here we are checking out our newly formed chrysalises. All 10 are changing into butterflies. We are studying the changes just like real scientists and recording and illustrating the changes we see. We moved them into their large, netted container so that when they do change into butterflies, they will have room to fly! We hope to have some butterflies VERY soon!
October 19, 2007-WE HAVE ADULT BUTTERFLIES! We are so happy that 9 pupas became butterflies. One is still changing but we are hoping it will emerge and will join our other butterflies. We were VERY EXCITED because we got to see on actually emerge from its cocoon! We will be releasing our butterflies soon so they can have a chance to fly.
October 22, 2007-It is time to set our butterflies free and say goodbye. Although we are sad to see them fly away, we know they will be happier living in nature. Thanks for helping us learn, butterflies!
