Third Quarter:

Happy New Year to you and yours!  We wish you well in 2011J.

As the weather continues to be cold and the students are remaining inside together during recess, please remind them (as we have) that being kind and respectful to each other is expected at all times!

Too many students are turning their work in late.  Please help your child by going over assignments from their assignment notebook each evening and check to ensure the finished product is placed in their folder.  When your child is ill, they have as many days as they were sick to catch up with their missed work and turn it in.  It is their responsibility to turn makeup work in to the teacher, rather than the teacher coming to ask for their homework.

Please encourage your child to do their absolute best to begin the third quarter on a positive note.  Ask them:  How they can do better these nine weeks?  How can they improve their grades?  Are they keeping organized?  Have they been taking advantage of extra credit when it is offered?   Has their work been completed in a neat and organized manner?

Note taking will be emphasized this quarter.  Tips for successful note taking:

*Be prepared with appropriate subject notebook and a pen/pencil and highlighter

*New page for each new class and put date on top of page

*Write brief notes, main ideas and listen for key points from teacher

*Write down page numbers from textbook for further information

     *Obtain notes for missed classes

*Be neat and abbreviate when possible

Note taking is an important study skill and will need much practice.

Please check with your child to see if they have the necessary supplies.  MANY are without pencils and many notebooks need to be replaced!

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to your child and Seton Catholic School!

Second Quarter:

ü    Report Cards- This year the report card looks much different!  Please go over each section of your child’s report card with him or her.  Discuss any questions either of you may have.  Go over any future expectations with them.

ü    P.R.I.D.E. Program- This program is new to your child this year.  P.R.I.D.E. gives your child an opportunity to be acknowledged and earn WWYW passes for community service, respectful behavior, involvement in Seton and other activities and dedication to academics.  We continue to emphasize respectful actions in all students, whether they are sitting in class or playing outside.

ü    Homework-   A lot of work is being rushed and not thoroughly done.  Please encourage your child to go over their daily work before handing it in.  Handwriting should be neat and legible, the correct heading should be present on each loose-leaf assignment or a name on worksheets, sentences should be complete when necessary, and directions need to be read and followed accordingly.

ü    Time Management- The children are still learning how to study and when to complete work.  We encourage each child to use their class work time and study hall time wisely.

First Quarter:

Please help make your child’s sixth grade year and introduction to the middle school a successful one by:

ü     Asking him/her about their homework and progress.  Check their grades online at rvsgradebook.com and their reading progress online through Accelerated Reader.  **Please keep the password and login information that your child’s teacher gave you on Parent Night.**

ü     Making sure they are organizing their folders and papers on a regular basis.  A student’s ability to locate his/her class notes, bring home the right textbook, complete and deliver an assignment on time is just as vital to his/her success in school as his/her ability to read or write.

ü     Checking his/her assignment notebook often.  Make sure your child is using this properly by filling it in each day.

ü     Covering hardcover books by Friday, Sept. 3rd.

ü     Signing his/her test/quiz in a timely manner so we can ensure communication of earned grades. (Only tests with a D or F earned will need to be signed)

ü     Ensuring your child gets adequate sleep and brings nutritious snacks.

ü     Periodically ask if he/she needs any school supplies replenished.

ü     Remember to look for Study and Organizational Skills (SOS) notes each quarter.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to your child and Seton Catholic School!
