Pack 109 Flag Ceremony

This is a flag ceremony that is normally used for Pack 109 den and pack meetings.  Flag ceremonies do not have to take this format.  They can include songs, different cub arrangements, and different commands.  However, all flag ceremonies should be respectful and orderly.

In most meetings the Leader part is played by the Den Leader.  However, as the boys mature, it is a good exercise for the older boys to perform the Leader role.  We rotate the Denner and Assistant Denner roles to that every boy plays that role.

Set up – Select area for ceremony.  This could be a stage or an area that is being used as a stage.  Place flag standards on both sides of the stage.  Place flags off-stage where the color guard can retrieve them.  Den or Pack will be sitting in group or on bleachers or doing another activity.

Leader: “Den #, fall in!”

Cubs line up facing the stage (backs to the audience), leaving some space between each boy.  The Denner begins the line to the right (facing the stage) and the rest of the cubs line up to the Denner’s left.  The Assistant Denner ends the line on the left.

Denner: “Dress right dress!”

The command directs the cubs to get proper spacing.  Cubs raise left hand out to the left side and look right.  Denner looks forward and holds left hand out.  Assistant Denner looks right and leaves left hand down.  The cubs adjust their position so that their right shoulder just touches the out-reaching hand of the cub to his right.  The Denner does not move.  The cub looking to the right adjusts his position.

Assistant Denner: “Ready, front!”

All boys slowly put their hands down and look forward.  No hands should slap sides.

Leader: “Color Guard, fall out and retrieve the colors!”

Denner and Assistant Denner take one step backward and go to where the flags are.  They prepare the flags for advancement.  The U.S. flag should be carried higher and in front of the pack flag.

Leader: “Audience, please stand.  Color Guard, advance the colors!”

As the color guard advances, the audience should all rise.  The color guard positions them selves behind the appropriate standard facing the audience.  As they face the audience, the U.S. flag should be on the right and the pack flag should be on the left.

Leader: “Color Guard, post the colors!”

The color guard puts the flag pole is the standards.

Leader: “Color Guard, fall in.”

The color guard returns to their positions by passing each other behind the flags and returning to the line.

Denner: “Hand salute!”

All scouts (youth or adult) give proper salute and face the flag.  Uniform caps are allowed to remain on head.  Any other hats should be removed from head.  Anyone not in uniform should place right hand over their heart.

All: “I pledge allegiance…”

Remember to say “one nation under God” as one phrase.  Salutes should remain in place until the Assistant Denner gives the next command.

Assistant Denner: “Two!”

Hands should slowly return to the cub’s side.  There should no slapping of sides or dramatic extended arm salutes.

Leader: “Den #, fall out!”

Cubs return to their seat and the meeting continues.
