Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!  I hope that all of you had a wonderful time during the holidays with your family and friends.  I know that I enjoyed my time with my family.  Hopefully, everyone is off to a good start in 2008, so now it is time to get back to work.

The students will be doing a book report this month.  I would like the children to read a biography.  Please help your child to pick out a book about someone that he/she has not read about before.  The length of the book does not matter.  I just want the students to become familiar with this type of book.  I have some biographies in the classroom, and the school’s library also has many, or you may want to check at the public library.  I would like to know the name of the book your child is reading by Tuesday, January 15, 2008.

The children will do a project with this book that must be completed at home.  The information and directions for this project are attached.  I will send home the paper that the project should be completed on when your child is ready for it.  Please remind your child to check for complete sentences, and proper punctuation and capitalization.  This project must be completed and turned in to me by Monday, January 28.  If your child finishes before then, he/she may turn it in early.  Thank you for helping with this project.

Also this month, we are doing the Happy Reader Club.  Remember if your child reads for a total of 3 hours. He/she will receive a free Little Joe’s pizza.

In math, we are studying the 6x – 9x facts.  Please, please if you haven’t started practicing these facts yet begin right away!  The students need to practice every night, and please keep reviewing the 0x – 5x facts.  The students need to get to a point where they know the facts automatically, not by counting on their fingers.  On Friday, January 18, the students will have a math quiz on just the 6x facts.

In English, we are going to study verbs.  In science, we will learn about the water cycle.  In social studies, we are beginning a chapter about the colony Jamestown.  In religion, the students are going to learn the prayer the Apostles’ Creed.

The 2nd quarter ends this Friday.  Look for your child’s 2nd quarter report card to go home on Tuesday, January 22, 2008.

Please send in items for our theme basket for the spaghetti dinner.  These items are due by January 11th.

You may want to check with your child to see if he/she needs any of their school supplies replenished.  I know that several students are in need of new crayons, pencils, and red pens or pencils.

The last week of January/the beginning of February is Catholic Schools’ Week.  Tuesday, January 29, will be Open House and then take your child out for lunch day.  I thought that some of you might need to make work arrangements ahead of time for this.  Please look for more information to be sent home regarding this week.

Please sign and return the January SOS form by this Friday.

Have a great month.  Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
