Information about 3S

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Parent Night and Third Grade!

In this folder is a packet that I prepared for you for Parent Night.  I have included a copy of our classroom rules, schedule, the cursive letters, and a copy of the multiplication facts.

Multiplication is “the big thing” in third grade.  Please begin practicing these facts at home with your child now.  Don’t wait until we get to that chapter in math.  Math is the one subject this year where you will see a lot of growth in your child.  He/she will learn their multiplication facts, division facts, how to multiply 2-digit by 1-digit numbers, long division with remainders, fractions, and much more.

In fact, you will be impressed by how much your child will learn in third grade.  The children definitely mature by the end of the year.

Every year, I feel that one of the most important goals that I have for my third graders is to teach them to be organized and how to study for tests.  I want to emphasize to you that your child is not ready yet to study alone.  They need you to help them study.  I also believe in emphasizing to the students the importance of studying ahead of time and not waiting until the night before a test to begin “cramming” for it.  Therefore, I will always send home the students’ textbooks a few nights before the test so they can begin studying.  If they study for 10-15 minutes every night before a test, they will definitely be prepared.  Also we will review together in class the day before a test.

On top of your child’s science worksheets I have printed “Save for Test”.  I want the students to save these (after they go home in their Monday folders) to use to study for their science tests.  Also after every lesson in the science chapter, we will fill out a lesson review together in class.  I will tell the students to take them home, keep them in a safe place, and use them to study for the science test.    The first chapter we will cover in science is about animals (chapter 2-Unit A).  This is a very interesting chapter, but it has a lot of vocabulary words that the students must know for their test.  All of the vocabulary words will be on the review sheets we fill out together.  Please make sure to ask your child about these review sheets.  Also don’t wait until the test.  You can begin reviewing the information as soon as a sheet comes home.

I will do the same thing with the worksheets in social studies.  They will have “Save for Test” printed at the top.  Please save the social studies worksheets to review for tests.

Sometimes I have students tell me that they just don’t have time to do their schoolwork or study because they are too busy with soccer, piano, etc.  I always tell my students that school should be their first priority.  Please help me to do this.

You should know that I do skip around in many of the students’ textbooks.  I always cover what is required; it is that I just do it in a different order.

A few other items that I wanted to let you know about are grades.  The students in third grade still receive E, G, S, N, and U on their report cards.

Terra Nova will begin on Wednesday, September 12 and will continue until September 25.  Please remind your child to get plenty of sleep and to eat breakfast.

Friday, September 14, is Picture Day for third grade, so it will be a Wear What You Want Nice Clothes Day.

I wanted to let you know about the reward system that I use in my classroom.  Each row/group of desks is given a number.  The groups are given the goal to reach 100 points by the end of the month.  Those groups that have reached 100 points will receive a reward such as a popcorn party, extra recess, a special movie, game time, etc.  The groups receive points for good behavior such as being quiet in the hallways, classrooms, at Mass, for following directions, for returning Monday folders on time, and various other ways.  However, if groups or students in the group are talking, not following directions, and so on the group can lose points.  I try to reward them for their good behavior, but I am also trying to have them use positive peer pressure to get their classmates to behave.  So, if your son/daughter has mentioned points at home this is what it means.

Please remember to check your child’s take home folder every night for notes or unfinished assignments.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.  I look forward to working with you this year.
