Commission on Education Meeting Minutes

December 3, 2007

I.                     Visitors: Teachers from Leadership Academy - Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Benfield, And Mrs. Verstraete

II.                   Opening Prayer: Msgr. Wellman

III.                  Recommendations:

A.   Roll Call: Fr. Levitt, Msgr. Wellman, Fr. Pilon, J. Barrett, M. Cornelis,  K. Larsen,  M. Andrews, C. Morris, D. DeJaegher, T. Gronski, M. Lopez, B. Larsen, S. Ronnebeck and J. Sheets; Absent: J. Scarpinato and  L. Hodge 

B.   Minutes of Sep. 17, 2007 read and approved.

C.   Request for thank you's to be sent to the committee heads from different fund raising committees for their efforts this past year.

IV.                Reports:

A.      Financial: K. Larsen explained the budget variance.  Booster Club transferred money. Magazine sales and Fall fundraiser down this year.

B.      Finance Committee: Dave DeJaegher - As reported in September:  Because of the increase in fund raisers during the 2006-2007 school year, the money originally earmarked from the Seton Endowment Fund for the Seton budget was not needed.  The Pastor Board contacted the Finance Committee and requested that rather than not taking the money from the Endowment Fund, that those funds be used, as originally planned, and that instead the three parish’s subsidies be reduced by that same amount.  Discussion was held as to how this should be communicated to the public.

C.      School: J. Barrett reported on -

·         Applications for the Spalding Scholarships are due in Feb.    

·        Non-Public School recognition from the Illinois State Board of Education begins next week.

·         The teachers will take ˝ day on Friday to work on the North Central Accreditation.

·         A second Smart Board has been purchased and will be on the 2nd floor of the elementary building. At this time, the board is in the Junior High to help spark interest.  A Seton donor has offered to purchase the boards as long as they will be used.

·        Mrs. Joseph had a hip replacement and her sub is Mrs. Parr.

·         Mrs. Parr will also sub during Mrs. Wolfe’s maternity leave.

D.      Parents’ Club: Mrs. Barrett Next event is Spaghetti dinner and Basket Raffle to be held at the end of Catholic Schools Week. 

E.      Booster Club: S. Ronnebeck – Golf fundraiser showed $8,000 profit.  Wreath sale is showing $27,000 profit.  Trivia Night will be held Feb 23rd.

F.      Development: Mrs. Barrett - The annual appeal will be held during Catholic Schools Week.

V.         Strategic Planning Committee Reports

 A.    Financial: B. Larsen - No report

 B.    Education: Goals have been met.

 C.    Marketing: C. Morris -

         An updated brochure was created and presented to the Board.  Comments were made that will be taken back to committee.   

         A Recruiting program was presented which includes congratulation cards at baptism and yearly Easter cards until the child reaches school age.  Questions asked and comments made that will be taken back to committee. 

VI.        New Business

 A.    Visitors Comments: None

 B.    Policy Making: J. Barrett - The policy committee will have the revised policies at the February meeting for the first reading.

 C.    Fr. Pilon requested that if the September meeting is moved permanently, that it not be moved to the third Monday of the month.

 D.    Msgr. Wellman asked that the minutes of the previous meeting and the new agenda be emailed to commission members a week prior to the meetings.

 E.    Msgr. Wellman announced that Sacred Heart has signed a contract to remove the current cafeteria floor and put down a new floor at a cost of $25,000 to Sacred Heart.  This work will be done over Christmas break.
