Commission on Education Meeting Minutes

February 4, 2008

I.                     Visitors: Teachers from Leadership Academy - Mrs. VanderVennet

II.                   Opening Prayer: Fr. Levitt

III.                  Recommendations:

A.   Roll Call: Fr. Levitt, Msgr. Wellman, Fr. Pilon, J. Barrett, M. Cornelis,  K. Larsen,  M. Andrews, C. Morris, D. DeJaegher, T. Gronski, J. Scarpinato, L. Hodge, B. Larsen, S. Ronnebeck and J. Sheets; Absent:  M. Lopez

B.   Minutes of Dec. 3, 2007 read and approved as corrected.

C.   Thank you’s requested last month were sent and the thank you’s to the committee heads for the Spaghetti dinner and Basket raffle will be sent next.

D.   Fr. Pilon read a letter received from a parishioner regarding the discussion of transferred monies discussed at December meeting.  Father distributed a spreadsheet with a comparison of expenses of St. Mary’s Parish and Seton School.  Discussion was held. 

IV.                Reports:

A.      Financial: K. Larsen - Discussion of old budget.  Discussion centered around families understanding of cost of educating their children.  

B.      Finance Committee: Dave DeJaegher - Proposed 2008/2009 budget.  It was suggested that Seton not make any major budget changes until after the Diocesan Strategic Plan for funding Catholic Education is announced.  Motion made by M. Andrews and seconded by J. Scarpinato to recommend the budget to the Pastors’ Board.

C.      School: J. Barrett reported on -

·        Seton just finished celebrating Catholic Schools Week.  

·        Re-registration begins March 3rd.

·        Kindergarten Round-Up is March 13th

·        Pre-K Open House is March 6th

·        Received a large bequest to the Seton Endowment Fund

·        Thank you to Sacred Heart for the new cafeteria floor

D.      Parents’ Club: L. Hodge – Meeting held Jan 8th.  Book Fair was a success.  Spaghetti dinner and basket was just held.  Planning the Walk-a-thon.  Memory books are in the works.  Fr. Pilon presented explanation of Seton Budget.

E.      Booster Club: S. Ronnebeck – Sixth grade basketball tournament – all received a trophy.  Trivia Night will be held Feb 23rd.  Next meeting will be held this week.

F.      Development: J. Scarpinato - As reported previously, the annual appeal was held during Catholic Schools Week.  A presentation was made to the Moline Foundation to purchase SMART Boards.  The bus for the area Catholic Schools is still going around town.  We have received as many free months as the number of months that were paid.

V.         Strategic Planning Committee Reports

 A.    Financial: B. Larsen - No report

 B.    Education: Goals have been met.

 C.    Marketing: C. Morris and J. Scarpinato - Discussed the updated school brochure and update on the Bearly Recruiting Program

VI.        New Business

 A.    Visitors Comments: None

 B.    Policy Making: J. Barrett - The policy committee presented updated policies on:  Maternity Leave, Post-Graduate Tuition Reimbursement, Parish Commitment, Staff Reduction and Student Arrival and Departure.   The second reading will be held at the next meeting.

VII.            Executive Session: None

VIII.      Adjournment: 8:45 p.m.
