Commission on Education Meeting Minutes

September 21, 2009

       I. Opening Prayer - Fr. Levitt

      II.  Recommendations:

A.      Roll Call: Fr. Levitt, J. Barrett. M. Andrews, M.Cornelis, D. DeJaegher, K.                                                                 Larsen, C. Morris, J.Sheets,  J. Scarpinato,

B.      Absent:  Fr. Trujillo, Msgr. Wellman, J. Caparula

III.  Reports:

A.      Financial – Karla Larsen - Decrease in tuition because of the decrease in students.  This difference can be offset with the personnel changes. Some have elected not to take the insurance offered by the school which cuts costs. We are projecting our maintenance fees may be slightly lower than previous years.

B.      Finance Committee:  D. DeJaegher -  No report.

C.      School :  Jane Barrett – reported on:

·         Linda VanderVennet has moved to act as principal at Our Lady of Grace Academy.  Lynn Bjork was hired to take her place in the 7th Grade Religion position.  Jennifer Johnson chose employment elsewhere. Megan Heller is our new First Grade teacher.

·         Our teachers have put in many unpaid hours to maintain our accredited status working on  three programs. (Bullying, Math Computation and Writing) They are using the Olweus Bullying Prevention Plan which is believed to make a school safer and a more positive environment to learn.

·         North Central Visits in 2011 with our continuing improvements we are interested to see how we measure.

·         Enrollment is a bit down from the last year due to our Kindergarten and our Pre-K programs being small classes.

·         Elementary and Middle school turned over the computer labs.  Our classrooms have better computers also.

·         Sacred Heart is getting ready to launch their website which will be good for the school.

·         Fr. Paco and Jane went to hear Brother William in Peoria about the implementation of the conversion of the New Board.

·         State of Illinois has had cuts in the budget that affected us.  There is no textbook loan or transportation reimbursement.  The Safety Block Grant has been decrease from 36.00 per student to 9.00 per student. The Title IV money went for the bullying program and supplies.

·         Moline has the only DARE program and we are excited about that for our students.

·         Parents Club is well underway with our Fall Fundraiser.

·         Review of the Policies will be done this year.

IV.                Adjournment: 8:52 p.m.

 Respectfully,

Julie Sheets
Recorder
