May all our Seton families and friends enjoy a blessed Christmas season and a joyful New Year!

RELIGIOUS FOCUS FOR DECEMBER…

This Advent as we continue to pray for peace around the world, we want to help our students focus on the inner peace that only Jesus brings.  We hope to provide some quiet moments at the beginning and end of each day for our students to focus on what it means to experience the peace of Christ amidst the “busy-ness” of everyday life.  To know Christ in the ordinary, simple tasks, common experiences, and relationships of our lives, is the gift of grace.  This is one way that Jesus comes into our lives. When we take the time to recognize the grace of everyday life, inner peace fills our hearts.  With this true peace of Christ in our hearts, we can look forward to a joyous and blessed Christmas celebration.

CAFETERIA AND PLAYGROUND MONITORS NEEDED…

We are in need of more adults to work as cafeteria and playground monitors.  Even if you can only work a couple days each week we could use your help.  These are paid positions and the hours are from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.  Please call 757-5500 and talk to Jane Barrett if you are interested.

SPALDING SCHOLARSHIP FUND GRANTS

Tuition assistance scholarship grants from the endowment fund established as a result of the Dioceses of Peoria ROOTED IN FAITH Campaign and named in honor of Archbishop Spalding, the first Bishop of Peoria, will be available for the 2008-2009 school year, for students enrolled in or intending to enroll in grades Kindergarten through 12 in any Catholic school located in the Diocese of Peoria whose families are members of a Catholic parish in the diocese. All grants will be based on financial need objectively assessed. Information about the grants and application materials are available in school offices.  Families of students currently receiving grants are reminded that all grants are for one year only and anyone seeking to renew a grant for 2008-09 must reapply. The application deadline is February 15, 2008. Notification of grants awards will be made by mid-April.

COLOGNE/PERFUME/BODY SPRAYS…

Parents and Students:

Due to the number of allergies/sensitivities of both students and faculty to cologne, perfume, and body sprays we ask that students please NOT wear either to school.  Strong scents trigger migraines and congestion for several of our students and staff members. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter.

BEFORE/AFTER SCHOOL REMINDERS…

As per the Seton School Policy on Student Arrival and Departure in Appendix I of the Seton Catholic School Parent/Student Handbook, please be reminded that students may not be dropped off before 7:45 a.m. as the doors will be locked until that time. As per the policy we also expect that students will be picked up between 2:50 and 3:00 p.m.  If your student is not picked up by 3:00 p.m. they must come inside the front doors of the elementary and/or middle school buildings to wait until their ride arrives. This is necessary for the safety to our students. The latest students may be waiting for rides after school is 3:15 p.m. In the middle school building there are often 20 to 30 students waiting for rides after 3:00 p.m. and later. This has become a real safety issue due to limited space and personnel available to supervise the students.

Again, we provide supervision from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. If students are here later than 3:15 p.m., they will be sent to T.A.S.K. in the elementary building and charged $3.00 per student. Also, students should not play on the playground after school unless they are under the direct supervision of a parent or designated adult. This has also become a safety and supervision problem, particularly with the older students.

GAME DAY SUPERVISION

As a service to families, student spectators, athletes, cheerleaders, and members of the pom squad may stay at school between 2:50 and 4:00 p.m. on the days we have home games if they follow these guidelines:

  • Report to Mrs. Moreno in the gym by 3:00 p.m. and pay $1.00
  • Sit on the bleachers or at tables and visit or work on homework.
  • Athletes may dress quickly in the locker rooms and restrooms after checking in with Mrs. Moreno. After changing, athletes are to return to the gym area and remain seated until their coaches or moderator arrives.
  • Athletes, cheerleaders, and the members of the pom squad are subject to the $1.00 fee if their coach or moderator is not there to supervise them by 3:00 p.m.

Once Mrs. Moreno leaves the gym area shortly before game time, direct supervision of students is over, but Mr. Pagett is there and in charge.  Students who stay for games are expected to stay inside the building at all times.  This is for the safety and well being of all our students.  Students are expected to follow the rules and directions of the adults in charge.  Students may not be in Mr. Pagett’s office or the concession area unless they are signed up ahead of time to help.  Students should spend the majority of their time in the gym watching the games, not hanging out in the hallways and restrooms.  Parents will be called if any student is found outside or repeatedly misbehaving at games.

TRAFFIC ISSUES...

If you are going to leave your car and come into the Middle School building either before or after school, please park in the lot on the west side of the building. That will help ease the drop off and pick up congestion. Thank you.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS NEEDED

Our substitute teacher list is dwindling! If you or someone you know is interested in substituting at Seton School, contact Jane Barrett.

Qualifications:

Must have a valid Illinois teaching certificate or an Illinois substitute teaching certificate and completed the diocesan mandated background checks and have attended the VIRTUS: “Protecting God’s Children” for Adults Program.

CAFETERIA NEWS

Please remember, it is necessary to call the school cafeteria (757-5536) by 9:00 a.m. if you are planning to join your child(ren) for lunch. Also, parents are asked to notify the main school office if other family members or friends are going to be joining their child(ren) for lunch.

AFTER SCHOOL PRACTICES AND REHEARSALS

If your student stays after school for a scheduled practice or rehearsal anywhere on the Seton/Sacred Heart property, siblings or friends who are not a part of that particular group or team may not stay with them and wait.  Our coaches and moderators are volunteers and cannot be expected to be responsible for any additional students.  Arrangements must be made for siblings to be picked up separately.  We do have an after-school program for students in grades 4-8 in the elementary building until 4:00 p.m. called T.A.S.K.  There is also after-school supervision provided between 3:00 and 3:45 p.m. on evenings of home basketball games.  Please call either office if you have questions about after-school supervision.

DENTAL EXAMINATIONS REQUIRED

Reminder: Students in kindergarten, 2nd and 6th are required to submit proof of a recent dental examination. Proof must be given to the school by May 1st.

Reminder…The school doors do not open until 7:45 a.m.  So, please, plan accordingly when dropping your children off during these cold months.

PARENTS' CLUB…

Dear Parents:

Thank you.  Because of your commitment to Seton School and our children the fall fund raiser was a success.

We now have achieved our goal of establishing two main fundraisers for Parents’ Club.  The fall fundraiser and the already successful Walk-a-thon will anchor both ends of our school year with the annual goal of raising $60,000.

Our next meeting is scheduled for January 8th. We would like everyone to attend to learn more about our group and our functions so that everyone can get involved.  Once again – thanks to everyone for their continued support.

For the Parents’ Club minutes, please check our Seton’s website, www.setonschool.com and click on Parents' Club Minutes under News and Events.

A huge thank you to our Seton family and others who supported us in our annual popcorn fundraiser. The scouts sold more than $21,000 in popcorn, smashing our old record and our sales goal. A special thanks to Roosevelt parents Sam and Jennifer Moyer, who coordinated the successful effort.

Congratulations also are in order for several scouts, who earned their Bobcat Badges, their first advancement award as Cub Scouts.
