Music Education Program

Preschool

Preschool music will introduce the children to nursery rhymes, finger play songs, movement and music games. The focus will be exploring children songs and activities.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten music will continue to gain accuracy in gaining a steady beat by clapping and movement. The focus will be introducing the students to a variety of children songs through singing, movement, and nonpitched instruments. Children will be in a Christmas program in December.

First Grade

The first year of music will enable students to experience the enjoyment of music through singing, movement, music games, and experimenting with  nonpitched instruments. Students will learn to identify and clap simple rhythms and notation. Children will perform in a December Christmas program.

Second Grade

Second grade music will continue developing musical skills through singing, movement, instruments and games. Students will expand and progress on rhythms and notation. They will also be in the annual Christmas program in December.

Third Grade

Third grade music students will continue developing musical skills, through singing and discussing different genres of music. They will be learning to identify the treble clef line and space notes, begin to read simple notation, and will continue to expand and progress on rhythm skills.

Fourth Grade

Fourth grade music will use their previous music skills by learning to play a song flute. They will learn to play a variety of styles of music. Students will study about the life and times of classical composers, their instruments and music. A field trip to the Quad Cities Youth Symphony is scheduled for the spring. Fourth grade students are eligible to join choir and participate in the weekly mass and concerts.

Fifth Grade

Fifth grade music will strengthen previous music skills by continuing to play the song flutes, study classical music, composers and their instruments. Students will explore, listen to and discuss different genres of music from blues and rap to gospel. Fifth grade students may join choir and participate in the weekly masses and concerts.

All Grades:

All music grades will work on listening skills with a variety of music.
Grades 1-3 will all participate in the annual Christmas play/program.
Grades 4-5 are all eligible to participate in the Seton Choir.
Classes will also consist of preparing music to participate in Mass.

Music Class Rules:

1. Be kind to one another.
2. Raise hand before speaking.
3. Listen carefully.
4. Keep hands and feet to yourself.
5. Posture/sitting up straight.
6. Try your very best.

Consequences:

Because our time is so short, students are expected to cooperate, participate and behave. After one verbal warning students will be removed from class. If rules continue to be broken, parents will be notified.
